Common issue with the yd25 engine is that the oil pump gears wear on the drive flats. The oil pump gears are sintered (powder metal heated and compacted in a mold) This is a widely used process that helps manufacturers keep costs down. However, it can result in inconsistent metal density which leads to rapid gear wear. See examples below.

Sintered materials are prone to shattering. If the gears are hit when reinstalling the harmonic balancer pulley it can break the gears. Aggressive rev limiters and crank walk-in high-performance engines also put a lot of stress on the oil pump leading to shattered oil pump gears.
OEM Gears Shattered Into Multiple Pieces |
To fix this issue we have developed billet oil pump gears. We make 2 types of billet oil pumps, the first type is made out of 4140 Chromoly, they are slightly wider than OEM but still have a single shoulder on the inner gear. For high-performance engines, we made billet 4340 Chromoly gears. The 4340 inner gear has a double shoulder this spreads the load over the harmonic balancer oil pump drive snout increasing the life of the harmonic balancer and gear.

Our oil pump gears are fitted to new oil pump housings. As the gears are larger than the OE part, the new oil pump housings are machined to suit our matched gear pairs. This process achieves precision tolerances which are individually measured and recorded on a quality assurance certification for each pump. Our oil pumps come complete with the oil sprayer fitted if you buy an oil pump off Nissan they sell the sprayer as a separate part, if the oil pump is fitted without a sprayer there will be enough oil pressure for the light on the dash to go out but not enough for the turbo and they will wear out every couple 1000ks. The alignment dowl on the pickup side of the pump is shortened to ensure it isn't pinched when installing the oil pump with the sump in place.

D22 OIL PUMP REMOVAL AND DESIGN ISSUES

D22 ORIGINAL OIL PUMP | YD25 D22 BILLET IMPROVED OIL PUMP |
With a standard D22 engine the sump must be removed to allow the lower oil pump timing cover removal. The first photo shows the oil pump pick up protruding into the sump. This is why the D22 sump must be removed first.
The second photo shows the oil pump with our new oil pump cover kit installed. With our oil pump cover we have machined the section of the pickup that drops into the sump, a fitting is then inserted into the sump to make up for the material removed from the oil pump back cover then an oring seals it this makes it like a d40 setup where the oil pump pick up is level with the sump. With our back cover kit fitted the oil pump can be removed without removing the sump. D22 oil pumps wear so if you are fitting one of our timing chain kits, consider this oil pump cover conversion as it will save a day's labor in the workshop should the oil pump need replacing at a later date.

D40 R51 HARMONIC BALANCERS
Before replacing your oil pump also check the oil pump drive. For d40s the harmonic balancer pulley drives the oil pump and d22s have an oil pump drive collar on the crank.
